How Clock Shift works
Everything Clock Shift does, start to finish.
Clock Shift is in active development. Some details may change before launch.
Your first sign-in
An empty calendar is the worst first impression this app can make, so a new account does not start empty. Seven shift types are already there: Early, Day, Late, Night, Off, Annual leave and Sick, each with sensible hours and a colour. All of them can be renamed, retimed, recoloured or deleted.
From there you are offered two routes. Add a single shift, which is the quickest way to see what the thing does. Or set up a pattern, which is the quickest way to fill a month.
Logging a shift
A shift is a date, a start time and an end time. Everything else is optional: an unpaid break, which type of shift it was, where it was, and a note.
The duration and the paid hours update as you type, so a break entered as 30 hours instead of 30 minutes is obvious immediately rather than at the end of the month.
An end time earlier than the start time means the shift runs past midnight. You do not have to tell it that, and you do not split the shift in two.
On a laptop this opens as a dialog. On a phone it is a sheet that comes up from the bottom. Same fields, same order.

The three views
Month is for planning. The whole month at once, every day carrying its shift code and colour.
Week is for the next few days, with room for the times rather than just the codes.
List is for when you want one answer: what is next.
A laptop opens on the month and a phone opens on the list, because that is what each screen is good at. All three are one tap away on both.

Repeating patterns
A pattern is a cycle of any length and a date it starts from. Four on four off is an eight-day cycle. Two days, two nights, four off is an eight-day cycle too. A fixed week is a seven-day one.
You lay out one turn of the cycle, say when it starts and how far ahead to fill, and it generates real shifts. They are ordinary shifts once created, editable like any other.
Nothing is written until you have seen it. The preview says how many shifts will be added and how many days you already edited will be left alone.
That last part matters. Swap a shift, pick up an extra, book a week off, then regenerate the pattern later, and the days you touched by hand survive.

Shift types and colours
A shift type carries a name, a short code, default start and end times, and a colour. The defaults exist to be changed. If your workplace calls it a Twilight or a Long Day, call it that.
There are ten colours. They are chosen to stay apart from each other and to stay readable in both light and dark, on a bright phone outdoors and a dim one at three in the morning.
Every shift shows its code as text as well as its colour, everywhere it appears. A calendar you can only read by hue is no use to a lot of people, and that includes a fair number of shift workers.
Nights and clock changes
A shift is stored as the wall-clock times you actually worked, in your timezone, and the hours are worked out from the real instants those times land on.
Twice a year that produces something that looks wrong and is right. The night the clocks go forward, a 19:00 to 07:00 shift is eleven hours, because one of them did not happen. The night they go back it is thirteen, because one of them happened twice.
Most calendars get this wrong by storing a duration rather than two instants. You find out when your hours disagree with your payslip.

Your account and your data
An account is an email address and a password. Signing in to app.clockshift.app sets one cookie, scoped to that hostname alone. This marketing site sets none of its own and shares nothing with it.
You can change your password, sign out everywhere at once, and delete your account. Deleting means deleting: the shifts, the patterns, the types, the lot.
Your data is stored on servers in the UK. It is not sold, not shared and not analysed. See privacy for the detail.
